Idle Lean Out & Stall Issue

Post by planetcaravan »

Hello,
I am setting up my Megasquirt, using MS2 Extra 3.3.1 and TS v2.5.05. I didn't get far before I stumbled on a very basic question that I could not answer. There is a reference in the MS2 Extra Manual that you can choose BASIC/ADVANCED USER settings in the BASIC SETUP tab. As a first time user and as I'm running a fuel only setup, I wanted to use the basic setup first to get me going. But alas I have looked everywhere and cannot find this option. I also could not find anything in the forum section. Could someone please point me in the right direction, as I'm so close to firing up the car - but yet so far!

Thanks in advance,

P :D

Select fuel only, that will be your basic setting.

That setting was removed a long while back.

James,

Thanks for letting me know. I thought I was going crazy when I couldn't find it. It seems that a lot of the screen shots on the MS2 Extra Software Manual are different to what I see on my version . Is there an updated version of the manual? Or do I just adapt my way through the setup.

Cheers,

Peter

The manual update is in-progress.

There's a draft TunerStudio reference manual available on the Downloads page linked above.

Hi All,

Just a follow up on the setting up of my MS2Extra. A really weird thing is happening, once i went through the initial setup of the project and the firmware, I used the COMMUNICATION SETTINGS function to test the COM port. My laptop only has one serial port and it is designated as COM1.

Every time I run the TEST PORT check via TunerStudio it comes back as failed. I have the settings correct I believe, as per the setup documents. I followed the trouble shooting which suggested using the PORTCHECK software. I did this and it worked fine, though I am not sure why is says 115200 baud at the top then 9600 baud lower on the test report. I believe that 115200 is the baud rate for MS2.

Even stranger is that the laptop seems to connect fine with the MS2 besides the supposed "failed!" port test, I spent most of today setting all the parameters required without issue before I try firing the engine up. Can anyone shed some light on these strange happenings? I have attached some screen shots FYI.

Also, James, thanks for pointing me in the direction of the draft TunerStudio manual, it was extremely helpful. I know you said that is was in draft, but I noted a few typo's and marked them down. Is it worth sending this feedback to the author(s). Having worked in the training area and written way to many procedural manuals,I know how easy it is to miss the simple stuff :D

Cheers,

Peter

This is actually a known bug in TunerStudio 2.5.05. It is already fixed in the beta version and is why Phil Tobin is very keen to promote the "beta" to "stable" ASAP. It will then be distributed to users via auto-update.

Re: Off Accel Stall

Post by planetcaravan »

Hi All,

Another step forward and another hurdle. After setting all the required parameters, the car fired up first go. Took a bit to keep it running though, but I have no cold start valve yet, and probably need to adjust the ASE and WUE a little. Once warm though, it starts fine. The idle was a little erratic, and took a fair bit of fuel to get it into the 12.5-13.0 range at idle. It seemed much happier then. A bit of tweaking of ACCEL ENRICH and the flat spot was mostly gone. Wow this all sounds so easy :D

Then i thought i should take it for an easy drive and play with the VE table a little. I want to get running as smoothly as I can before taking it to the dyno guy for a proper tune. This is where i stumbled on the next hurdle. The car drives okay (I took it very easy though), but when pulling up it leans out to the point of stalling or almost stalling. Not very good when sitting in traffic! I tried adding a lot more fuel in the area on the VE TABLE where it is stumbling before the stall, but this seems to be making no difference.

Is there some other setting that might be at play here? Any advise would be much appreciated. I have included the current tune and a log for your reference.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi All,
I changed the title of this topic as I have moved on from my original query.
Hoping someone can steer me in the right direction with this idle lean out and stall issue.
I have been chasing my tail with this for a week now :(
Please see my previous post for the details, tune and log.

Hi Arran,

Thanks for the reply. I haven't seen anything called IDLE VE. Where is that found in the settings? I looked around in the FUEL SETTINGS and the STARTUP/IDLE SETTINGS but couldn't see anything like that. I thought IDLE was also covered by the primary FUEL VE TABLE?

Hi All,

After lots of trial and error and lots of searching on the web, I appear to have found my idle lean out & stall issue. In fact, this small change to the injector open time made a huge difference to the overall tune-ability of the engine. Thanks to the guys on a MX5/Miata forum for the info.

Here is the link if anyone is interested here:
