Engine Cuts Out / MS Reset Mid-RPM

Postby flosho » Sat Jun 16, 2012 6:07 pm

Megasquirt 1 v3, edis 4

Just recently began tuning my car with a new turbo. I've encountered an issue where my engine will cut out intermittently. I've looked at a few datalogs when it happens and it shows a hard reset. It is usually above 4000 rpm, and it feels like it happens when I am giving it more throttle, so if I roll into the throttle more gently it will go up to 4-5k and not cutout. I don't have a TPS hooked up currently so I don't think it would be TPS related?

I've attached my MSQ and two datalogs. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

It's probably not the TPS. I would check wiring for noise sources instead. First question: Where is the MS grounded?

I use a relay board and the relay board is grounded to the battery and the battery is grounded to the chassis with the factory ground strap.

I'll double/triple check the grounds.

I double checked the grounds and installed a new TPS.

It seems these resets occur right at 4000 rpm pretty consistently.

I did some datalogging tonight using the trigger logger. I took the car up to 4k rpm and it cut out again like it does, and then Megatune gave me an error box, saying to power cycle megasquirt to view the error code. I turned the car off and back on and did not see any error code.

So then I went to communications>mini terminal but both boxes were blank.

I checked my overboost protection in msq and it is set to 170kpa so that is CLOSE to where the reset occurs but the last datalog i have it resets at 4200rpm and 137 kpa.

The resets come at 4223 / 137kpa, 4632rpm / 163kpa, 4323 / 151kpa, 3984 / 163kpa,

However I have been able to take it all the way to redline 6100 rpm and above 4500 w/o reset but only when its a much slower rise in rpm.

Can you get a screen shot of the error box?

I think the error box was only due to myself trying to trigger log, since I use EDIS with the EDIS module and I've read that EDIS/trigger logging in TS do not go together. Because the box popped up when I was in the diagnostic screen and I haven't tried to log it again and the error box hasn't showed up any other time.

It's still pretty consistent with this reset at ~4200 RPM.

I'm thinking it may be something grounding out. Perhaps with the movement of my engine which is causing a ground out? Because if I roll in slowly to the throttle and accelerate slowly it doesn't cut out at 4k, but if I jump into it more it will?

Does that even sound plausible?

I guess I'm narrowing it down to something mechanical since the settings should not have changed and the hardware I'm running (different turbo, same boost level I'm already tuned for, etc) but the engine has been out and the wiring harness was tidied up..

What exactly is the "old car stereo noise suppressor" thing you used?

And you just rewired the power/grounds/switched wires to better wires?

Yeah that is basically it. I used that and that got rid of my resets.

I rewired all my efi to a new relay from painless. The oem harness was getting to old and unreliable. This also solved any ecu/inj voltage issues.

I've finally ordered a couple noise filters. I will report back when I get them and wire them in.

I didn't have these reset problems prior to my engine pull and install.

There were changes, but I think I've thought of something that could cause the this problem.

In stock form my Alternator is mounted on rubber bushings and then is grounded with a ground wire to the intake manifold. Since I've installed the new engine, the alternator was relocated/mounted and has solid metal mounts so it is already grounded through the casing.

Could this cause excessive noise in the 12v+ ?

It is really the only change as far as the wiring goes...

Wired in a noise filter and saw no change in the resets. They still happen.

I also switched where I had the EDIS capacitor grounded and that also had no affect.
